“If you never did, you should. These things are fun.  And fun is good.” –Dr. Seuss

And fun was the number one comment from students and staff from our March Grow Groups gathering, celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday!  WCES Media Specialist, Amanda Preston, 4th Grade Teacher, Jennifer Hunt and the Grow Group Committee truly outdid themselves with the planning of this fun-filled hour of learning and discovery. Grow Groups meet quarterly and consist of one staff member and about 12 students of varying grade levels.  New friendships have been made and observing these groups working together with their projects shows how they have become little “families”.

This quarter’s event began with each group sharing one Dr. Seuss story.  After the book was read, the teams then worked on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities that were related to the theme found in the book and incorporated recycled materials. Some examples were: building a stacking cup towers to represent The Cat in the Hat’s hat, creating moving fish from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, and designing balloon rockets from Go! Dog! Go!, just to name a few.  So much fun!

Student Nash Lingner, 5th Grade, commented, “I liked meeting all of the younger students and getting to interact with them.  This time around it felt like everyone was more comfortable with each other and it was the most fun grow group ever!” Student Harper Alles, 1st Grade, also added in, “We get to do all sorts of things that are fun.  For this one we did Green Eggs and Ham and we made egg launchers.  We tried to get our egg to fly the farthest.  It was fun because we got to be creative.  We also got to do the photo booth and used Dr. Seuss props to take our picture with.”  But creator Amanda Preston stated it best, “My favorite part is seeing kids all over the building doing lots of different, fun things as a community.”

As you can see, our students are growing leaps and bounds while having fun in our Grow Group families.  If you would like to see some fun and amazing photos from our activities, please click on this link to take you to our photo gallery:
