What does it take to grow a garden of readers?

  1. A garden is started with just a seed.

The gardener must plant the seed.  How can reading be planted for our WCES students?  It might take a parent reading to or with a child until they feel more successful as a reader.  It might take a parent who is willing to take their child to the public library to look for books that get them excited about reading.  Or, it might only take a reminder to make sure that our readers are reading daily and filling out their calendars with their minutes.  We want our readers to be supported in whatever way necessary to help them grow as readers!

  1. A garden must be watered in order to grow.

Seeds grow into plants and flowers because they receive water, nutrients, and sunshine.  The thing that will grow our readers is to READ, READ, READ!  We want to encourage each Wolf Creek student to read daily at home.  Each month we will send home a reading calendar for you to keep track of your reading minutes.  All you have to do is write down how many minutes you read each day, total it up at the end of the month, and return the calendar to your teacher.  It helps if everyone has them turned in by the 5th day of the following month.  Your first calendar will come home at the very end of August.

  1. Individual plants grow into a garden.

As each of our individual readers grow, our garden of readers will burst into full bloom!  We are working together to grow this garden.  So, each month we will total up how many minutes we read as a school.  We will celebrate that number.  Each month we will have a different prize.  It might be a class reading party for the class that read the most minutes.  Or, it might be a Cosmic Jump coupon for the top reader in each class.  Watch the calendar for each month’s exciting prize.  We look forward to celebrating our reading growth all year long.  But, if we reach our goal of 1,400,000 minutes, we will celebrate with a garden reading party day.  We will also keep track of all of our reading minutes in our Reading Garden outside the library.  Let’s watch our reading minutes grow!
