On Wednesday April 10, children’s author Bridget Heos visited WCES and shared about becoming an author and writing books.

Bridget began writing small stories when she was a young child.  As she grew a little older, she decided she wanted to be a star in plays like Annie.  When that didn’t pan out, she decided to write her own plays.  As a fifth grader, she was successful at writing plays for the neighborhood kids to act in.  When she graduated, she worked for a newspaper. Eventually, this led to her dream job of writing children’s books.

Bridget began her writing career by creating nonfiction stories on a wide variety of topics including biographies, insects, history, animals, and more.  Her favorite thing to write about is science, especially insects. She told students that insects are like “strange aliens that live right here on our planet”.  Bridget explained how she comes up with an initial question for a book and then begins doing research to find more information.

After writing over 100 nonfiction books, Bridget decided to change directions and try writing fiction books.  She began developing an idea for a book where a baby is born with a mustache. Bridget told students that she revised her Mustache Baby story over 100 times before meeting with publishers.  Having a publisher accept a book is very challenging. Usually only one in one thousand books that a publisher receives actually goes on to be turned into a book. Bridget walked students through the different steps a book goes through from being accepted by a publisher, getting matched with an illustrator, having the cover chosen and finally getting printed.

Students listened as Bridget read Mustache Baby and her newest title, Arrr! Mustache Baby.  Engaging with these fun stories and Bridget’s knowledge helped students to begin dreaming up their own stories.
