Learning about the American Flag and President Abraham Lincoln

Patriotic Fun in Second Grade

Second grade students at WCES had two very exciting activities this week that helped them learn a bit more about our country!

On Monday February 11, a member of the American Legion shared a special American Flag presentation with second grade students. The American Legion is an organization that works to mentor youth, advocate for patriotism, and support our fellow service members and veterans. Students watched a demonstration on how to properly fold the American flag. They also learned the flag’s symbolism before watching a video that explained the meaning behind the words in the Pledge of Allegiance.

After learning about this important American symbol, second graders were ready to meet a president on Tuesday February 12! That’s right! President Abraham Lincoln came to school! Abe was brought to life with a riveting account of his life and times, thanks to an actor from Kansas City Young Audiences. Making it even more special was that the visit occurred on what would have been Abraham Lincoln’s 210th birthday! Few Americans have had a more profound effect on American society than our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. What a fantastic lesson for our students!

Our second graders were very lucky to have both of these experiences to help them learn important lessons about our country!
