STEAM Team

What do the letters STEAM stand for?  They could stand for Students Teams Engaging and Activating Minds!  In reality, those five letters stand for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.  And more importantly, they are the name of one of our new specials times at WCES.

Every-other-Wednesday, students have the opportunity to visit the STEAM Lab during their specials time.  Computer teachers Ms. Jones and Mrs. Tipton, along with Library Media Specialist Mrs. Preston are leading this special instruction time with students.

The goal for this time is for students to have hands-on exploration in one (or more) of these areas:  Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. As students work on projects in these areas, they are practicing having a growth mindset.  This comes from the belief that your abilities and intelligence are things that can develop and grow with effort. In order to have a growth mindset, kids (and adults) need to practice viewing challenges, not as failures, but as a chance to grow and stretch themselves.  In STEAM, kids try many new things and they may make mistakes. The goal is to accept that mistake and keep trying! Students are also using their teamwork skills as they work together to accomplish exciting tasks.

Students began the year with Lego Engineering challenges that helped them learn about the letters in STEAM.  After that, they focused on the M and T in STEAM which are Math and Technology. Students used Osmos to manipulate Tangrams into certain shapes.  They also used online pattern blocks to create designs. Check out this link for more online pattern block fun: https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/pattern-shapes/

This year is an exciting adventure as our students dive deeper into STEAM time on Wednesdays. If you would like to see some pictures of their time in STEAM, head over to the Photo Gallery under the Parent tab on the WCES website.  Or checkout this link.
