Wolf Creek Learning Fun

Thursday September 19th was a day full of learning fun at WCES! Kindergarten students participated in apple activities. First graders learned about Native American homes during a Tipi presentation. Second graders spent time out in nature by traveling to the Overland Park Arboretum.

Kinder students have been learning about plants in their Science unit. They have learned about the different parts of a plant by studying apple trees and discovered how important bees are to the life cycle of an apple! They celebrated all of their great learning with an Apple Tasting Day and making applesauce. Students had the opportunity to taste a variety of different apples and vote on their favorite. The kinder winner happens to be the Pink Lady variety.

First graders are learning about Native Americans and their homes. Students had the opportunity to hear from a Johnson County Parks and Recreation officer who taught them all about Native Americans that lived in Kansas and how those tribes built their homes. They learned that different types of homes were constructed based on the materials that each tribe could find in their region. Students discovered how the people of the tribes worked together in their daily life. Then, our first graders used their teamwork skills to help construct a life-sized tipi. They learned about ways Native Americans kept their tipis warm or cool without the modern day luxury of air conditioning and heaters. First graders were able to lay on a buffalo hide inside their tipi and discuss the different traditions of the Native Americans.

Second grade students spent the day at the Overland Park Arboretum learning about plants and animals that make their homes in Kansas. Students had the opportunity to take a tree tour and learn how to calculate the age of a tree. Second graders practiced using a compass while playing a nature bingo game. They also had a wonderful time birdwatching and identifying different birds.

It was a full day of learning fun! To see some pictures of all this learning in action, check out this link to the WCES Photo Gallery.
